There are three ways to book shore excursions:

1.  Cruise line – The easiest way to book a shore excursion is with the cruise lines.  Let’s talk pros and cons.

The pros of booking a shore excursion through the cruise line:

a. The cruise lines will assist you throughout the disembarkation.

b.  The cruise line will book the excursion either before OR during the cruise.

c.  If there’s a problem, the cruise line may assist, i.e. if the excursion is running late,  the ship may wait.

The cons of  booking an excursion through the cruise line:

a.  There may be many people on the same excursion i.e. you most likely will be traveling by bus.

b. It will, most likely, cost more.

2. Choose a reputable private excursion business – There are at least three reputable private companies that book shore excursions for just about every cruise. They are “Port Promotions”,”Shore Excursions Group” and “Shoretrips”.

The pros of booking a shore excursion through a private business:

a. The trips usually have fewer people in smaller vehicles, i.e., private cars and vans.

b.  These companies offer most of the same excursions as the cruise lines.

c.  The excursions are more friendly to your wallet!

The cons of  booking an excursion through a local business:

a.  You may be on your own if there are any problems or break downs.

b.  The ship will not wait long for you. However, Shore Excursions Group has a fabulous return to ship guarantee!*

c.  You disembark on your own to meet up with your local guides.

3. Simply walk off the ship and negotiate with the tour operators and taxis that are waiting in the port to service you.

I recommend either taking advantage of the excursions offered by the Cruise Line or booking with Port Promotions, Shore Excursions Group, or Shoretrips.
